Township Board Duties & Responsibilities

What is the Board of Trustees?

Mandated functions are activities that townships are required to perform. The three broadest mandated responsibilities are assessment administration (Supervisor/Assessor), elections administration (Clerk) and tax collection (Treasurer). State laws also specify details for performing these functions. The Township Board of Trustees “the Board” is made up of 5 members: Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer, and 2 Trustees. All members are responsible for the township’s fiduciary health and must vote on issues at the monthly board meeting. They are charged with the fiscal health of the township.

Permissive Functions

Beyond the mandated functions, Michigan townships are authorized to provide a wide variety of services that are generally expected from general purpose governmental entities. In Silver Creek, we provide fire protection and law enforcement through contracts with Sister Lakes Fire Dept, Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Dept, and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Our parks and recreation currently consist of a bike trail and Russom Park, which is in partnership with the City of Dowagiac. Many areas have sewer services offered with Sister Lakes Area Utilities Authority or Indian Lake Sewer systems. We offer a Clean Up voucher for passes to the Orchard Hill Landfill during June and September. We are currently looking into Interlocal agreements to solve the Ambulance service issues. We are currently contracting with SMCAS for coverage. We partner with the Cass County Road Commission to maintain our public roads.
